Beware Of Using Air Purifiers in Haze Weather

Now that the beginning of winter has arrived, haze weather has significantly increased in various regions. To improve the indoor environment, air purifiers are being used much more frequently than usual. When particulate matter from outdoors enters the purifier's working range, some machines automatically switch to a high-speed mode to clean the pollution entering from outside. However, as haze continues to flow in from outdoors, the purifier will keep running nonstop, creating excessive noise and seeming endless. It might even seem better to simply close the windows and use the purifier, since it can still clean the indoor air. But, ladies! I want to remind everyone that running an air purifier for extended periods in an unventilated room actually poses certain risks!

Air Purifiers

Opening windows for ventilation, even though it allows a continuous influx of outdoor particulate matter, at least ensures some fresh air exchange. After closing the windows, the air purifier can gradually eliminate indoor haze and PM2.5. However, if the home is kept tightly sealed for a long time, the hidden dangers of air purifiers can quietly erode our health:

① Dampness Leading to Filter Acidification

Haze contains moisture, which increases humidity when absorbed by the filter. For example, in the humid climate of southern regions, combined with indoor-outdoor temperature differences when windows are closed, air purifiers are more prone to moisture, leading to bacterial growth. This can actually increase the risk of secondary pollution indoors, as germs and viruses may escape from the purifier's outlet, contaminating the surrounding environment. Suggestion: Choose an air purifier with sterilization capabilities that can irradiate the filter to deactivate microorganisms. This reduces the likelihood of microbial reproduction and significantly extends the filter's lifespan.

   ② Ozone Hazards Endangering Health

Many people are unaware that some air purifiers generate ozone while operating! This may not be an issue during regular ventilation, but when ventilation is limited or you stay indoors for long periods without air exchange, ozone can easily accumulate. This poses significant harm and irritation to children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Suggestion: If your home cannot be frequently ventilated or includes sensitive individuals, choosing an ozone-free air purifier can directly avoid this risk.

Air Purifiers

When haze is severe, close windows and doors and turn on the air purifier. Then, check a air quality app and choose a time when haze concentration is relatively low, such as midday, to ventilate. If conditions permit, open opposite doors or windows to create airflow. Ventilating for 5-10 minutes can be highly effective. Since this time is short, the total amount of PM2.5 entering is limited and can quickly be cleaned by the air purifier after closing the windows.
